White Mask Varré (白面のヴァレー) is an NPC in Elden Ring.

Overview

Varré is an enigmatic man who dresses in the garb of a war surgeon. War Surgeons, despite their name, are not surgeons or doctors. They act as mercy killers on battlefields, putting dying soldiers out of their misery as quickly as possible by delivering final blows. Varré was a war surgeon prior to his association with Mohg.

Varré was abducted by Mohg against his will along with various other war surgeons, however it was noted that Varré was particularly talented with blood incantations, and that of all the war surgeons abducted he was the only one able to "tame" Mohg's cursed blood. Somewhere along the way Varré came to genuinely worship Mohg. If game data is accessed to remove his mask, you can see Mohg's emblem painted on his forehead.

Varré is generally regarded as enticing but deceitful. He is eloquent and is kind to the Tarnished at first, but this appears to be a front as his personality can change dramatically if elicited by disobedience. For example: He will try to suggest he is helping the Tarnished, and refers to them with the pet name "Lambkin", but if provoked he consequently will refer to them as a "runt" and "low born". If the tarnished refuses Varré's offer to join Mohg, then he will indignantly remark that they must have misheard his request, and that he will wait "for your ears to clean out."

Varré seems to also harbor some level of sadism, or in the least, an indifference to the pain of others. He asks the Tarnished to soak a cloth in a finger maiden's blood and remarks that since they have no maiden of their own, "any maiden will do". When he injects the tarnished with royal blood and they scream in pain, he chuckles in a shocked tone and says "clench your teeth, or something." When the ritual is completed he will remark that the tarnished as "the sweetest scream". If attacked at the Rose church he will remark upon killing the tarnished that "materials of quality are so hard to find these days", revealing that he only ever thought of the Tarnished as a material or tool.

Events in Game

The Tarnished first encounters him in Limgrave, after exiting the Stranded Graveyard, where he offers them guidance, noticing that they are not accompanied by a Finger Maiden. He advises the Tarnished to journey to Stormveil Castle and challenge Godrick the Grafted for his Great Rune, and recommends that they visit the Roundtable Hold.

The Tarnished encounters him again in Liurnia of the Lakes, outside the Rose Church. Here, he tests the Tarnished's dedication to the Two Fingers, expressing his own doubts about the veracity of their words. If the Tarnished shares his concerns, he reveals himself to be a loyal disciple of Mohg, Lord of Blood, and offers the Tarnished the opportunity to join his new dynasty. After the Tarnished completes their initiation, by soaking a cloth in the blood of a maiden, Varré awards them with a medal which will grant them audience with Mohg when the time is right. He also injects the Tarnished's finger with noble blood, allowing them to invade other worlds.

The Tarnished journeys to Mohgwyn Palace where they encounter Varré for the final time, invading his world and defeating him. Varré dies on the ground of Mohgwyn Palace after blessing Mohg's dynasty.

His invasion sign is located in the hallway before the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace. After defeating him, Varré will be found laying on the floor close to where the sign previously was.

1. Limgrave (The First Step)
   • (Optional) Talk to Varré next to The First Step Site of Grace.
   • (Optional) After visiting the Roundtable Hold, return to Varré and exhaust his dialogue.
   • (Optional) After obtaining a Great Rune, return to Varré and exhaust his dialogue.
   • (Optional) After talking to Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold, read the message he leaves behind to receive the "Bravo!" Gesture.
2. Liurnia of the Lakes (Fallen Ruins of the Lake)
   • As he moves at the entrance of the Rose Church after speaking with Enia, talk to him, selecting They didn't seem right, and exhaust his dialogues to receive Festering Bloody Finger x5.
3. Altus Plateau (Road of Iniquity Side Path)
   • Interact with the invasion sign of Magnus the Beast Claw, found at the Writheblood Ruins south-west of the Site of Grace, and either defeat him or simply invade him three times. Invading actual players with the Festering Bloody Fingers three times is also enough to progress Varré's questline.
4. Liurnia of the Lakes (Fallen Ruins of the Lake)
   • Return to Varré to receive the Lord of Blood's Favor, which needs to be coated in a maiden's blood. The followings options are available:
     • The corpse of your Finger Maiden in the Chapel of Anticipation, which requires using an Imbued Sword Key at the Four Bellfries of Liurnia.
     • Vyke's Finger Maiden in the Church of Inhibition of Liurnia.
     • Killing Irina of Morne or, if already deceased, Lightseeker Hyetta at any of their locations.
5. Liurnia of the Lakes (Fallen Ruins of the Lake)
   • Return to Varré to receive the Bloody Finger, then talk to him again to receive the Pureblood Knight's Medal.
6. Mohgwyn Palace (Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance)
   • Reaching Mohgwyn Palace either through the Pureblood Knight's Medal or the Waygate in Consacrated Snowfield, interact with Varré's invasion sign in the hallway right before Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace. Once defeated, he'll drop Festering Bloody Finger x6, Rune Arc x1 and Furlcalling Finger Remedy x1.
   • Talk to him near where his invasion sign was and, exhausting his dialogues, he'll die dropping Varré's Bouquet.
