Vagabond is one of the starting origins in Elden Ring.
It has the unique disadvantage of starting out at 77.97% equip load, exceeding the 70.00% threshold of Heavy Load, resulting in slower, shorter rolls. The easiest way to correct this is to remove either the Halberd they are carrying (for a Longsword-focused build) or the Helmet they are wearing (if wishing to carry both weapons) or the Longsword and the Gauntlets (for a Halberd-focused build). Alternatively, increasing Endurance to 15 will also get them down to Medium Load, letting them roll normally.

Build Optimization[]
For people who wish to select an origin that will have the most optimal stat distribution for a build with the fewest stat points wasted, Vagabond is the most effective choice for several build types. Note that these builds are not necessarily "good", they are just what this origin is better at than any other.
Strength + Dexterity[]
The primary benefit of Vagabond is that it saves a total of 5 levels when compared to Wretch across its Intelligence, Faith and Arcane stats. Builds that require at least 14 Strength and at least 13 Dexterity while also not investing in the other three stats will find Vagabond to be the most optimal origin. For builds that also wish to minimize the Mind stat, the Hero origin is able to tie with Vagabond in efficiency, but the Hero is not able to outclass Vagabond outright for a build that only increases Strength and Dexterity out of the five damage-increasing stats.
If a build requires fewer points in Strength than 13, Samurai becomes the most efficient option. If a build requires fewer points in Dexterity than 13, Hero becomes the most efficient option.
Strength + Intelligence[]
For a build that focuses exclusively on Strength and Intelligence as its damage-increasing stats, Astrologer and Hero are tied for being the most optimal starting origin to choose. However, Vagabond will share a tie with Astrologer if the build also requires at least 13 Dexterity, with 4 fewer stat points wasted compared to Wretch. This makes Vagabond an optimal choice for Strength + Intelligence builds that use weapons with high Dexterity requirements such as:
Strength + Faith[]
Similarly to Strength + Intelligence, Prophet and Hero are tied by default for the most efficient starting class for a build exclusively utilizing Strength and Faith investment to increase damage. However, Vagabond is the most efficient option for a build that also requires at least 13 Dexterity, wasting 4 fewer stat points compared to Wretch. This makes Vagabond the optimal choice for Strength + Faith builds that use weapons with high Dexterity requirements such as:
- Golden Halberd
- Siluria's Tree
- Ordovis's Greatsword
- Magma Wyrm's Scalesword
- Blasphemous Blade
- Grafted Dragon
- Devourer's Scepter
- Gargoyle's Black Blades
Dexterity + Faith[]
By default, Prophet is the most efficient starting origin for a build that exclusively invests in Dexterity and Faith to increase damage output. However, if the build also requires 14 or more Strength, Vagabond becomes more efficient, wasting 4 fewer points compared to Wretch. This makes Vagabond the optimal choice for Dexterity + Faith builds that use weapons with high Strength requirements such as:
