The putrescence is what remains of the impure lives kept within the stone coffins.- Congealed Putrescence

Stone coffins, also known as coffin-ships,[1] are objects in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Background[]

The massive stone coffins housed the remains of impure individuals,[2] who were sent off with Great Grave Glovewort as part of their burial rites. Resembling colossal arks, these coffins are decorated with sculptures of bulls, beasts, and the bearded, tablet-clutching man of the Ancient Dynasty. They washed ashore on the Cerulean Coast,[3] arriving in the Lands Between long ago when Death was still burned with the cold ghostflame.[4] The tainted flesh had putrified into a foul liquor that nonetheless received the cleansing Death rites of the time.[5]

Over time, the coffins accumulated in the Stone Coffin Fissure and their leaked contents pooled in the Garden of Deep Purple. After St. Trina was abandoned by Miquella the Kind during his pilgrimage through the Realm of Shadow, the sludge imbibed her nectar and coalesced into the Putrescent Knight.[6]

Locations[]

Stone coffins are found only in the Realm of Shadow along the Cerulean Coast and inside the Stone Coffin Fissure. A few nearly touch the adjacent Charo's Hidden Grave.

Notes[]

  • The stone coffins feature abundant carvings of people, trees, and snakes. The topmost layer is held up by a procession of figures.
  • The Ancient Dynasty man found inside is depicted with a shorter beard, holds an unbroken tablet, and lacks his usual roots.
  • The coffin interior features hallways lined with columns, but the center is completely solid.
  • Some coffins are embedded in the earth in a way that gives the impression the surrounding rock was solidified around them.
  • They are depicted on the stone obelisks found in the Hallowhorn Grounds along the Siofra River, which are lit to confront the Ancestor Spirits.
  • Artistic representations of the coffins are found throughout the Tower of Enir-Ilim.
  • The coffins inside the Stone Coffin Fissure are guarded by Sentry Stones that fire energy beams and Gravebirds with soporific powers.
  • Grave Crickets are drawn to the stone coffins.
