Spirits (霊, Rei), souls (魂, Tamashii), phantoms (幻影, Gen-ei), sprites(精霊, Seirei), vengeful spirits/rancor (怨霊, Onryō), and wraiths (呪霊, Jurei) are states of being in Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree.
Overview[]
Spirits are the remnants of the dead. Not everyone can see or hear spirits.[1] Spirits are generally defined by their ability to appear out of thin air, be summoned by Spiritcaller Snail, or be immune to Status Effects. Some spirits are fully ethereal, while others are wholly physical. Other types of spirits exist somewhere in between.[2]
Spiritcaller Snails, Wandering Mausoleums, Commander Niall, Commander O'Neil, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, Tibia Mariners, Large Sanguine Albinaurics, and the Tarnished can all summon spirits.
The Soul is inherently tied to the Elden Ring[3], and dwells within living beings. They are alive[4], and can be killed without killing the body, and vice versa.[5] It can be projected out of the body in the form of a Phantom, allowing it to be summoned by others.[6] Sorcerers imbue their souls into Primal Glintstone,[7] allowing it to be transferred into new bodies. Upon death, souls return to the Elden Ring, currently via the Erdtree, presumably to be born into new bodies.
Spirit Ashes[]
- Main article: Ashes
White spirits are summoned from Spirit Ashes by ringing the Spirit Calling Bell.[8][9] These items contain the spirits of those who have yet to return to Erdtree.
Vengeful Spirits[]
Vengeful spirits, also known as rancor, are the product of hex magic. They are born from the bitterness and resentment of victims who died. These rancorous skulls angrily fly through the air.[10][11] They are empowered by those who vow to carry their grudges.[12]
Watchful Spirit[]
- The watchful spirit is a guardian that summons smaller apparitions. It is the power of the Hornsent Grandam.[13]
Wraiths[]
Folks who died while cursed became wraiths, a specific type of vengeful spirit.[14] These prowling wisps may be unleashed by Omens and Omen Bairns. The Omens' curse is tied to their blood, which is favored by the Formless Mother. The pious Revenant Followers use Wraith Calling Bells to summon wraiths.
Background[]
Souls came into being when the One Great was fractured by the Greater Will long ago.[15]
Souls were imbued into weapons by the stone Golem Smiths of the ruined forges.[16]
The spirits of the dead are left to wander without some form of guidance.[17] The Tibia Mariners were the first gravekeepers and have always lent their leadership.[18][19] Like the Grace of the Erdtree, a lamplight is said to guide the spirits of fallen warriors the spirit to the Helphen.[20] Spirits destined for Erdtree Burial followed the blue light of Rosus guides the spirits of the dead to the catacombs.

Notes[]
- The terms used for Soul in the Japanese script generally refer to the animating consciousness which dwells within living beings and reincarnates upon death, while the term used for Spirit generally refers to the spectral presence left behind by the dead, more akin to a ghost.[21] This distinction seems to hold in Elden Ring, with souls being reborn through the Erdtree and spirits lingering in the form of ashes and such.
- An individual's body, soul, and spirit are connected but separate parts of one's identity.[5]
- The Deathbirds used ghostflame to separate spirits from ashes.[22]
- The Furnace Golems use a form of Messmerfire to burn bodies down to the soul.[23]
- Various types of unusual souls and spirits appear in the game.
- Fia's Champions are manifestations of the warmth and vigor siphoned from the many heroes held by Fia, Deathbed Companion.[citation needed]
- The Dung Eater binds his victims' spirits to his own body.[24][25]
- Like Ulcerated Tree Spirits, the Ancestral Spirits and their horned remains are fully corporeal. They gain new abilities and shine brighter after absorbing the spirits of animals.[citation needed]
- Though Serosh is normally ethereal like a spirit, he can turn corporeal at will.
- Puppets are usually corporeal, but sometimes appear as phantoms.
- The short-lived Larval Tears that sprout from spiritgraves are neither flesh nor spirit; they are a unique form of life somewhere in between.[26]
- D, Hunter of the Dead and D, Beholder of Death are one soul with two minds and bodies.[27]
- Like Marika and Radagon, Miquella and St. Trina were two entities sharing the same body. When Miquella shed St. Trina, she gained an independent, physical body.[citation needed]
- Divine Elements like Scarlet Rot and Messmerfire are able to inhabit and grant life to Putrid Corpses.[citation needed] Those Who Live in Death may function similarly.[verification needed]
- Non-living things can be imbued with spirits or souls.
- Primeval Sorcerers transfered their souls to primal glintstones.[28][7]
- Warrior Jars can harness the combined power of the champions they contain. When heroic Alexander, Warrior Jar finally cracks, Jar Bairn is selected to inherit Alexander's Innards and fighting spirit.
- Golem Smiths read wrinkles in metal to grant souls to Molten Tears and Smithscript weapons.[29]
- The spirits of white banners appear over the sites of the major battles of the Shattering, including in the Altus Plateau, Capital Outskirts, and Wailing Dunes. The spirits of fiery red banners are present in the boss arena for Gladius, Beast of Night.
- Many ancient gravestones on the Gravesite Plain turned into spiritgraves, the eldest of which have already faded away.[30] Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon transforms her Juvenile Scholars into spiritgraves when she rebirths them with the amber egg.[citation needed]
- Ashes of War are the essence of mighty techniques.[31]
- Sprites are drawn to holes, where they form nests.[32] Conversely, spirits naturally are drawn to Grave Violets and Gloveworts Spirit Tuners use these to bolster spirits.[33][34] Grave Keepers used Spirit Glaives to commune with spirits.[citation needed]
- Spirits can be permanently destroyed by the Frenzied Flame.[35]
