Somber Smithing Stones (also simply known as Somberstones) are Bolstering Materials in Elden Ring, of which 10 variants exist. They are rarer counterparts of ordinary Smithing Stones required for upgrading certain special Weapons.
They can be used by Smithing Master Hewg or War Counselor Iji to incrementally upgrade such special Weapons in exchange for runes, up to +10, consuming one stone in the process. Each "tier" of Somber Smithing Stone can upgrade an armament once, to the same level as the number in their name. Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are the sole exception to this naming scheme, being the equivalent of a Somber Smithing Stone 10.
However, for ordinary armaments, regular Smithing Stones are needed instead; such armaments can be upgraded all the way to +25, and require 12 stones per 3 upgrades, except for the final one which only requires 1 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
They can be found scattered through both the Lands Between and the Realm of Shadow, sometimes looted from certain enemies when killed, or purchased from some Merchants in usually limited quantity. However, excepting Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, they can be purchased in unlimited quantity from the Twin Maiden Husks after giving them Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings, of which 4 are scattered throughout the Lands Between.
