The priests became guardians of the birds through the rite of Death, which also serves as an oath sworn to their distant resurrection.- Death Ritual Spear

The servants of Death were a faction in Elden Ring.

Background[]

In an age long past, the servants of Death worshipped an outer god. They venerated the Deathbirds as evil deities, symbolically invoking them during sacrificial rituals.[1][2][3] Their mother, the twinbird, valued meaningful death; those who faced death with valor were granted a glorious end.[4][5] Other worshippers preserved their lives in hopes of making a greater sacrifice in the future.[6]

Decline[]

Over time, the influence of the Deathbirds waned. Some priests pledged their spears to protect the birds, entering the rite of Death in exchange for a promised, distant resurrection.[2] Later, Gravebird golems were created in the Deathbirds' likeness to guard the spiritgraves on the Gravesite Plain.[7][8][9][10] Although a few hexes continued to be practiced in the tower of Enir-Ilim,[11] the importance of the ghostflame diminished, and its secrets were eventually forgotten.[12]
