Rya the Scout is an NPC in Elden Ring.
Overview[]
A young woman who works as a scout for the Recusants of Volcano Manor, tasked with recruiting Tarnished to the cause.[1] Rya is the adopted daughter of Tanith[2], although she believes her to be her true mother.[3] In truth, Rya is a Man-Serpent of Mt. Gelmir, born of a repellent birthing ritual[4], and her true name is Zorayas.[5]
Rya first encounters the Tarnished in Liurnia of the Lakes, where they assist her in retrieving her Necklace from Blackguard Big Boggart. In return, Rya invites the Tarnished to Volcano Manor, where they have the opportunity to join the Recusants and serve under Tanith. During their service, the Tarnished stumbles upon Rya in her true, serpentine form.[6] Rya reports hearing slithering sounds beyond the walls of the Manor[7], and begins to question her origins when the Tarnished reveals to her the secrets of the Manor, having previously believed herself to have been born of a king's grace.[8] When the Tarnished presents her with the Serpent's Amnion, which she surmises to have come from her birth mother[9], she ventures deeper into Volcano Manor to learn the truth behind her birth, hoping to one day be able to call Tanith her mother again.[10]
Concerned about her daughter, Tanith requests that the Tarnished give Rya a Tonic of Forgetfulness, to prevent the distress caused by the truth of her birth.[11]
The Tarnished finds Rya deep within the Manor, where she reveals that she has discovered her origins as the product of a hideous ritual.[12] Distressed, she begs the Tarnished to kill her.[13] Should the Tarnished agree, she will thank the Tarnished and her mother before passing.[14] Should they instead give her the Tonic of Forgetfulness, she will fall asleep, and later return to the Manor's drawing room, with no memories of her journey, still believing Tanith to be her mother.[15]
Should the Tarnished refuse to kill her or give her the tonic, she will leave Volcano Manor, leaving behind a letter declaring her intention to set out on a journey so that she can continue Tanith's work.[16]

Questline Progression[]
Note: This questline locks after killing Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, and all steps not yet completed will no longer be available.
- (Optional) Liurnia of the Lakes
- Rya can be found in a folly north of the Laskyar Ruins. Speak to her and exhaust her dialogue, then travel to Boilprawn Shack and purchase Rya's Necklace from Blackguard Big Boggart. Return to Rya and hand over the necklace to receive an Invitation to Volcano Manor.
- It is not possible to kill her in this location, as she is protected by a barrier.
- (Optional) Altus Plateau
- If the previous step was completed, Rya will be waiting at Lux Ruins in Altus Plateau. Speak to her and she will offer to transport you to Volcano Manor.

- Volcano Manor
- Rya can now be found in the Volcano Manor drawing room after joining the Recusants. After defeating Old Knight Istvan and receiving the reward from Tanith, talk to Rya in the drawing room, then reload the area and enter the previously locked room across the corridor from the drawing room to find Rya in serpent form. Exhaust her dialogue.
- Volcano Manor
- After defeating Rileigh the Idle and receiving the reward from Tanith, speak to Rya in the same room as the previous step. Go into the room next to this and pass through the illusory wall at the back, then follow the path to the prison Town Church Site of Grace. Rest at the Site of Grace, then return to Rya and speak to her once again.
- Volcano Manor
- After defeating the Godskin Noble boss in Volcano Manor, obtain the Serpent's Amnion and give it to Rya.
- (Optional) Speak to Tanith to obtain the Tonic of Forgetfulness.
- Volcano Manor
- Rya can now be found in a small room above the Temple of Eiglay Site of Grace, past an Iron Virgin. You now have three options to resolve this questline.
- If you received the Tonic of Forgetfulness, you may offer it to her, causing her to fall asleep. After killing Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, return to the Volcano Manor drawing room and speak to her. Reload the area and return to where she was to obtain Daedicar's Woe.
- If you choose to kill her, you will obtain Daedicar's Woe.
- If you refuse to kill her and do not give her the Tonic of Forgetfulness, return to where she was after defeating Rykard to obtain Daesicar's Woe and Zorayas' Letter.
Notes[]
- The reward for Rya's questline, regardless of the outcome, is Daedicar's Woe, said to represent a woman who gave birth to a myriad of grotesque children.[17] This may imply that Daedicar is Rya's birth mother.
- Her true name, Zorayas, appears in the 1978 novel, Night's Master, by British author Tanith Lee. The Zorayas of Night's Master is the daughter of a deposed tyrant, adopted and raised unaware of her origins.
