The Rune of Death (死のルーン, Shi no Rūn), also known as Destined Death (運命の死, Unmei no Shi),[1] is an nonplayable Great Rune in Elden Ring.
Overview[]
The Beast Eye quivers in the presence of Death
Prior to the creation of the Golden Order, the Rune of Death was part of the Elden Ring,[1] and influenced the fated deaths of even the Demigods.[2]
Golden Order[]
- Main article: Golden Order
After Marika ascended as a God, she removed the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring. This act marked the beginning of the Golden Order,[3]
Gloam-Eyed Queen[]
At some point, the Gloam-Eyed Queen managed to gain possession of the Rune of Death, channelling its power with her Godslayer's Greatsword[4] to amplify the power of the black flames.[5] The Empyrean would then use the Rune and its power to hunt gods, leading her Godskin Apostles in their God Hunt. However, she was ultimately defeated by Maliketh, the Black Blade,[6] the loyal shadowbound beast of Queen Marika the Eternal.[7] Following this, the Rune of Death was sealed within Maliketh, the Black Blade,[8] the loyal shadowbound beast of Queen Marika the Eternal.[9] and its power was harbored within Maliketh's Black Blade.[10] Following this, the Rune of Death was sealed away and the true power of the black flame was lost.[5][11] The sealing of the Destined Death would remove the fated deaths of the Demigods from the Elden Ring, granting them immortality.[2][10] and the true power of the black flame was lost.[5][12]
Night of Black Knives[]
- Main article: Night of Black Knives
At a later point in history, a fragment of the Rune of Death was stolen from Maliketh by Ranni the Witch, who used it to create the godslaying Black Knives through a fearsome rite.[13][14] On the Night of Black Knives, the Black Knife Assassins used these blades to murder Godwyn the Golden, the first Demigod to perish in all of recorded history.[15] However, due to Ranni carving the Cursemark of Destined Death into her flesh at the same moment as Godwyn's death, he was unable to die a proper death and perished in soul alone.[16][17] Meanwhile, Ranni's flesh perished and her soul continued to live, inhabiting a doll body.[17]
Deathroot[]
The Deathroot violated the Golden Order
After the Night of Black Knives, Maliketh bound his sword within his own flesh in order to ensure that none would ever steal Death again.[10]
Godwyn was given an Erdtree Burial at the Erdtree's roots in the Deeproot Depths beneath Leyndell, Royal Capital.[18] However, his soulless body soon began a grotesque transformation into the blighted Prince of Death.[16] Fragments of the Rune of Death began to spread through the underground Greattree roots connected to Godwyn's corpse, sprouting in the form of Deathroot,[19] and leading to the rise of Those Who Live in Death.[20] The roots of the Erdtree were subsequently disconnected from the deeper roots.[21][22][23]
Game events[]
In the guise of Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman, Maliketh would attempt to reassemble the Rune of Death by consuming Deathroot.[24] To this end, he employed the likes of D, Hunter of the Dead, and later, the Tarnished to retrieve Deathroot for him from throughout the Lands Between.
The Rune of Death was later unbound by the Tarnished defeating Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula, in their attempt to burn the impenetrable thorns blocking the entrance to the Erdtree, in order to become Elden Lord.[25][26]
Notes[]
- The Rune of Death is an inverted Marika's Rune.
- Like Maliketh and his Black Blade, the Gloam-Eyed Queen was said to have channelled Destined Death with her Godslayer's Greatsword.[27]
- A power similar to Destined Death appears to be wielded by the Black Blade Kindred, certain Vulgar Militia, and the Baleful Shadow. However, it only inflicts damage over time, and does not reduce maximum HP like the effect of Maliketh's Black Blade, the Black Blade incantation, or the Black Knife.
- The depiction of an eclipsed sun could ward away Destined Death.[28]
Trivia[]
- Destined Death may have been inspired by the "Death Rune" from RuneQuest, which Miyazaki has cited as an inspiration for Elden Ring.[29]
