Foul trespasser. Send word far and wide. Of the last Queen of Caria, Rennala of the Full Moon. And the majesty of the night she conjureth.- Ranni the Witch
Rennala bewitched Raya Lucaria, becoming its headmaster.
The young Lunar Princess was an astrologer who gazed at the night sky and chased the stars. In her youth, Rennala and her younger sister, Rellana, encountered moons that one day made them champions.[1] Hers was an enchanting full moon. Later, she bewitched the Academy of Raya Lucaria with her lunar magic, becoming its master. She prohibited study of the primeval current at the academy, exiling its founders, Azur and Lusat. She established the house of Caria as royalty and anointed the enchanted Carian Knights, heroes of the highest honors.[2][3][4][5][6]
In the age of the Erdtree, a champion known as Radagon led Queen Marika's armies against Liurnia of the Lakes. Rennala and the academy rallied forces to repel the invasion. She led her Glintstones Knights and,[4] despite numbering fewer then twenty, their magic made them a match for even the champions of gold in battle.[9] Two Liurnian Wars were fought, both of which saw no clear victor.[10][11]
Radagon ended the Second Liurnian War by cleansing himself with Celestial Dew. Repenting his territorial aggressions, he swore his love to Rennala.[12] They married at the Church of Vows, uniting the houses of the Erdtree and the Moon.[13] As a Carian Queen, Rennala bestowed Radagon a Moon greatsword in accordance with a long-standing tradition.[14][15] They had three children: Radahn, Rykard, and Ranni.[16] Rennala led young Ranni by the hand to meet her Dark Moon.[17]
Realizing their heartbroken queen was no champion at all, the Academy rebelled against the Carian Royal Family and Rennala was locked away in the grand library.[20][21] Clutching the amber egg left to her by Radagon, she dissociated, devoting herself to the grim art of reincarnation. She would use it on Juvenile Scholars found around her, calling them her "sweetings", continuously rebirthing them in an imperfect process which would leave their memories fading into oblivion.[22] The children born anew by Rennala were all frail and short-lived, imperfect beings, each and all.[23]
Game events[]
Rennala remained in the Grand Library throughout the reign of Lord Radagon and the ensuing Shattering war. She hovered idly in the air, clutching her egg, while her reborn Juvenile Scholars sang a lullaby that shielded her in a golden, moonlike bubble.
If the Great Rune separates from Rennala, a protective mechanism activates, releasing a dense black fog. The disembodied voice of Ranni the Witch warns intruders as an illusory image of Rennala emerges from the darkness to battle the player upon a moonlit sea. This apparition reflects Rennala as she once was, at the height of her power.
If the illusion is defeated, the present Rennala regains her egg and sits quietly in her bassinet at the center of the library, calling softly to her timid sweetings.
Characteristics[]
A tall, barefooted woman with an immaculate, pale complexion and lustrous black hair. She is dressed in deep blue and red robes with gold trim and wears a large hat curved like the crescent moon.
Rennala's first phase occurs in a circular room with an open inner area and a more narrow outer area, divided by bookcases. Rennala floats around the room encased in a golden sphere that prevents her from taking damage. The majority of her Juvenile Scholars congregate in the inner arena, however a few can be found hiding behind the bookcases.
Rennala rarely attacks directly during this phase. Instead, the Juvenile Scholars lunge, breathe fire, and use telekinesis to assault the player with the books and globes. They also drop chandeliers from the ceiling if the player stands underneath them. However, Rennala periodically converts scholars to gravestones, which she sends flying towards the player. She also summons new Scholars to replace those the player has slain.
One of the Scholars sings, surrounded by a golden aura. The song grows louder as the player draws near. Hitting the singing Scholar at least once—without necessarily killing them—causes another to begin singing. Disrupt three singing Scholars to shatter Rennala’s sphere, dropping her to the ground and leaving her vulnerable. While she lies stunned, the Scholars cease their attacks, giving the player an opening to strike. After a few seconds, Rennala releases a golden explosion and rises again, her protective sphere restored. Repeating this process several times creates additional opportunities to damage her.
Defeating Rennala triggers a cutscene, and advances the fight to Phase Two. A spell placed by Ranni the Witch on the amber egg activates, releasing a dense fog of darkness.
After the cutscene, the arena transforms into a vast, moonlit watery plane with no obstacles or clutter. Ranni's illusory Rennala engages the player directly with a full health bar. She relies primarily on ranged magical attacks but also swings her staff to strike if the player approaches too closely.
When her health drops below 60%, she begins summoning spirits for assistance. Each time she summons, a glowing circle expands around her, dealing damage to anything within it. She can call forth a Bloodhound Knight, three wolves, a Flying Dragon, or a Troll Knight, each lasting only a few seconds before vanishing. During this phase, Rennala moves more evasively, making it difficult for melee fighters to land consistent attack chains.
Moving away from Rennala's homing attacks is simple, as there is nothing to get stuck on or blocked in by. However, there is nothing to separate Rennala from her summoned allies.
Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon (NPC)[]
After defeating her, Rennala becomes an NPC, remaining in the library where she was fought in phase 1. As an NPC she offers two services: Rebirth allows the player to reallocate levels to different stats at the cost of a Larval Tear, while Cosmetics allows the player to alter their character's appearance, which is the same function that the mirror in Roundtable Hold has.
When Sorceress Sellen moves to the Academy of Raya Lucaria during her questline, she will temporarily occupy Rennala's spot, while Rennala will move behind one of the bookshelves in the library. She will return to her usual place once Sellen's questline is completed.
Dialogue[]
English dialogue
Intro cutscene
Hush, little culver.
I'll soon birth thee anew, a sweeting fresh and pure...
Note: "Culver" is not a direct translation of anything in her Japanese lines. Instead she refers to the player as 貴方, which means "you" in reference to someone of equal or lower standing.
Phase 2 cutscene
When summoning
If the player is killed (phase 2)
Defeat
After fight
If talked to
Leave
If talked to again after not selecting "Rebirth"
Selecting "Rebirth"
If talked to after performing Rebirth
While hidden behind a bookcase (Sellen's questline)
Notes[]
Wears the Queen's Set and wields the Carian Regal Scepter as her Glintstone staff. It is one of the best staffs in the game and it enhances full moon sorceries.[24]
Rennala survives their fight and may interact with the player. She is always found in the Grand Library at the top of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
After Rennala is defeated, she allows players to change their appearance or reallocate their stats using her Rebirth magic. The process requires Larval Tears.
When Sellen takes over the Academy, Rennala can still be found in the Grand Library, hiding behind some bookshelves. When Sellen eventually turns into a Graven Mass, Rennala is back in her place while Sellen is moved to the side of the library where she remains for the rest of the game.
The approach to the Grand Library which houses Rennala is guarded by Moongrum, one of the last Carian Knights who once served the Lunar Queen. A Mad Pumpkin Head and Giant Silver Tear also protect the route.
