Redeemer Guilbert, also known as Mercenary Swordsman, was an NPC character that was cut from the final version of Elden Ring.[1] Information about Guilbert and his associated content may no longer be canonical.
Overview[]
Redeemer Guilbert was a gruff and eccentric figure who fought for vengeance. He was encountered in various areas around Tenebrae (now Limgrave). This character provided commentary about the various Demigods and also acted as both a Cooperator and an Invader. If the player killed one of the Nomadic Merchants, Redeemer Guilbert would Invade them at any of five locations.[2]
Guilbert's questline in Tenebrae would have steered players toward Smithing Master Hewg and a confrontation with Godrick the Grafted at Stormveil Castle.[3][4]
Although initially planned to play a significant role in Elden Ring, Guilbert and his associated content were ultimately scrapped and do not appear in the final release. Fragmented details about him were uncovered through datamining an early version of the game.
Background[]

Guilbert reconstruction by SekiroDubi
Redeemer Guilbert was victimized as a child and was too weak to exact his own revenge. He held a deep-seated grudge until a do-gooder vanquished his tormentor on his behalf.[5] Guilbert later became a Redeemer,[6][7] fighting for vengeance in service of those unable to seek it themselves.[5]
Guilbert swore an oath to avenge General Radahn and targeted Godrick the Grafted and Malenia the Rotted.[4][8][9] He venerated the God of Vengeance and claimed to sense acts of revenge as they occured.[10][11][12]
Guilbert's first in-game target was Crucible Knight Ordovis, a boss trapped within the Erdtree-Gazing Evergaol.[13][14] If summoned as a Cooperator for this fight, Guilbert later recounted a dream in which he fought alongside the Tarnished to avenge those wronged by Ordovis.[7][15]
Afterward, Guilbert began to contemplate Radahn's grievances and declared Godrick the Grafted to be his next target.[8] He traveled to Stormveil Castle, where he supposedly gave the player a Key Item. This item could be delivered to Roundtable Knight Vyke, then located beside the Rampart Tower Site of Grace, who would have given Neutralizing Boluses in exchange. Guilbert's mission was to slay Godrick to avenge those who had been grafted, and was summonable near the Secluded Cell Site of Grace.[4]

English Dialogue |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins (Talk) |
---|
Good Lord! Good God of Vengeance! |
Till grudges soak the lands! |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins (Talk again) |
Oh... |
I see, you're Tarnished. |
I am Guilbert. A Redeemer of vengeance. In all its forms. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins (Talk again) |
By the way... |
Have you heard of the crucible knights? |
There's one by the name of Ordovis, and I must find him. |
He's an old hero of the Shattering, but there's a grudge out against him. |
The Lands Between are brimming with those who cannot die. It makes for a cesspool of vengeance. |
...Gives me a shiver just thinking about it... |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk; after Crucible Knight Ordovis is defeated solo) |
Ah, you... |
Did you defeat Ordovis of the Crucible? |
I could sense it. The God of Vengeance surely smiled upon that battle. |
Heh... |
Maybe you're meant to be a Redeemer too... |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again; Unused) |
Did you defeat Ordovis, the Crucible Knight. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk; if Mercenary Swordsman was summoned for Crucible Knight Ordovis) |
Oh, there you are... |
It must have been a dream. Strange. |
I was fighting at your side. Against Ordovis of the Crucible. |
It was a revenge so sweet, fit to serve the very God of Vengeance. |
Heh... |
Maybe you're meant to be a Redeemer, as well... |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again; Unused) |
I was fighting at your side. Against Ordovis, the Crucible Knight. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again; in reference to nearby Demi-Human corpses) |
These fellows? |
Who knows, just some lads who did someone wrong. |
They got what was coming, nothing more. |
If you're intent on revenge, pray to the God of Vengeance. |
You'll have yourself a corpse in no time. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again) |
In the Lands Between, everyone lives longer than they should. |
They may go mad, but even so, they plead to the God of Vengeance. |
That's why I'm here. To exact revenge for those who can't do it themselves. |
Like someone did for me, when I...when I was but a tyke. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again) |
You're Tarnished. Then you're here to fight, aren't you? |
For the Elden Ring. |
Well, there's something you ought to know. |
There's an aberration of a blacksmith past the checkpoint that leads to Stormveil. |
He doesn't seem to think much of anyone or anything, but oddly, he's willing to smith weapons for Tarnished. |
He has a fine arm. Have him take a crack at your goods. |
...The question for me, of course, is whether he's in need of any vengeance... |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again) |
Alright, then. |
I'm off to Stormveil Castle. |
Lord Godrick has kept busy with his grafting... |
Slicing off arms like harvesting ears of wheat. He's run up a mighty debt in blood. |
A demigod, yes, he may be... |
But no one escapes a Redeemer. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again) |
I was thinking... |
Godrick must have an idea. |
About the vengeance sought by General Radahn, to whom I swore my oath. |
...Yes, Godrick's corpse will know what to do... |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk again; Unused) |
Godrick must know. |
That of all the grudges born of the Shattering, Malenia the Rotted is the object of the most profound. |
Dragon-Burnt Ruins: (Talk) |
Ahh, my head is throbbing, everything is bright red... |
Master Radahn, is this how it feels to ferment with vengeance? |
I can hardly keep from trembling... |
Invasion (before first introduction) |
Hello there, I don't believe we've met. |
I'm afraid you've made yourself the object of somebody's ire. |
As a Redeemer, I'm bound to exact revenge. |
Prepare to become an offering. |
Trust me, you'll rest easier as a corpse. |
Invasion (after first introduction) |
Well, well, you've made yourself a target of vengeance. |
Perhaps this, too, was meant to be. |
Prepare to become an offering. |
Trust me, you'll rest easier as a corpse. |
When struck |
Whoah, what're you playing at? (OKテイク, v303902000_ALT_3) What're you playing at? |
When struck 2 |
... |
This is a little awkward. |
There's no revenge to be had in this killing. |
When struck 3 |
Not too sharp, are you? |
If you want to die, ask someone else. |
Upon death |
Let it be known. |
Wherever vengeance must be had, a Redeemer there will be... |
??? |
Oh, my Lord. Good God of Vengeance! |
Till grudges soak the lands... |
Player kill |
Don't you see now? |
There is no escape from a Redeemer. |
Player kill |
Death ought to be earned. |
What am I to make of this? |
Invade again |
Didn't I tell you before? |
No one escapes a Redeemer. |
Prepare to become an offering, once and for all. |
Trust me, you'll rest easier as a corpse. |
Notes[]
- Redeemer Guilbert's questline would have intersected with cut questlines for Roundtable Knight Vyke, Merchant Kalé, and the Nomadic Merchants. He would have provided foreshadowing for Smithing Master Hewg.
- Defeating Guilbert's invasion would display "Redeemer Died" on the screen.
- Having Redeemer Guilbert invade the murderous player incentivized using Celestial Dew to receive absolution at the Church of Vows.
- Only Guilbert's audio files seem to remain in the current build of the game.[17][verification needed]
Trivia[]
- Guilbert was likely reworked into a few different characters:
- Bloody Finger Hunter Yura: they share a voice actor and use a similar manner of speech.[18][19] Their initial friendly encounters are placed in the same spot beneath the Fallen Ruin outside Dragon-Burnt Ruins. They are both driven to bring justice to wrongdoers on behalf of the downtrodden (Yura is a Hunter of Bloody Fingers).
- Castellan Jerren: other elements, such as the Eccentric's Set, Flamberge, and oath to General Radahn, are part of Witch-Hunter Jerren's character.
- Edgar the Revenger, Hornsent, Revenger: they are each vengeance-obsessed Revengers.[20][21][22]
- In the Chinese version 1.00 of Elden Ring, the text description for the Flamberge referenced the Redeemers and the God of Vengeance.[23]
- Guilbert's dialogue places Smithing Master Hewg in Stormhill at Stormhill Shack (then Scavenger's Shack, a hub for NPCs) at this point of Elden Ring's development. This location is now occupied by his counterpart, Roderika, Spirit Tuner.
