I stand with blade aloft, blood afire.
For the dignity of my lord and master, Mohg.
Pureblood Knight Ansbach

ER Custom Icon Pureblood Knights

The Pureblood Knights were once the oath-sworn champions of Mohg, Lord of Blood. Esteemed noble servants defined by their extravagant clothing and elegant swordsmanship. These men, along with their master, swore a pact of blood to each other,[1] to one day establish a new and glorious dynasty. The oldest known member of this entourage is the commander, Sir Ansbach, a scholarly gentleman of noble manners and frightfully deadly swordsmanship.[2] When Mohg became ensnared by Miquella's enchantment, Ansbach sought to challenge the ever-youthful demigod in an attempt to free his master. And while he managed to grievously injure the empyrean,[3] Ansbach was ultimately defeated in the confrontation by having his heart stolen, just like his master.[4]

Ansbach's defeat would mark the beginning of a degradation in the values of the Pureblood Knights.[5] Who, in the belief that it could eventually bring about their desired dynasty, would begin to hunt their fellow man in order to harvest their blood and offer it as sacrifice to slake the thirst of Miquella's cocoon.[6] Steadily gaining infamy as nothing more than depraved, blood-crazed zealots that stalk their own.[7] With most of the newer members inaugurated at this time, the Bloody Fingers, being Pureblood Knights in name only.[8]

  1. Sir Ansbach: "In the end, I could not bury the memories. Of Lord Mohg, and our pact of blood."
  2. Leda:"But in his day, he was the feared commander of the Pureblood Knights."
  3. Leda: "-who cleaved open Miquella the Kind with his blood blade."
  4. Sir Ansbach: "Once, in an attempt to free Lord Mohg from his enchantment, I challenged Tender Miquella, only to have my own heart rather artfully stolen."
  5. There is a significant disparity in the mannerisms and displayed values between the older, noble Ansbach and the other members of Mohwyn that the player can meet.
    • Varré has a slimy and manipulative manner of speech. Trying to tempt others into joining Mohg's ranks so that they may commit bloodshed against fellow Tarnished, while at the same time decorating said acts with ideals of love and honor. Only to reveal his yearning for power when he dies at the end of his questline.
      • Varré: "O...Luminary...Mohg...
        Please grant...the strength...you promised...
        I have given...everything...
        Please...my lord..."
    • Eleonora once hunted dragons alongside Yura. And as she was a Drake Warrior, she would have admired the drakes for their fearsome wrath and majestic strength, a feeling that Yura sympathizes with. Eleonora would eventually become a Bloody Finger and to her old partner's despair, began to hunt her fellow Tarnished. Even going as far as to grievously injure him and leave him for dead.
    • The Bloody Finger from Ravenmount originated from a group of assassins who yearn to imitate the deahtbirds as bringers of death.
    • Okina comes from a land trapped in endless civil war and maddening bloodshed. Okina became a bloody finger after Mohg offered him the life of a demon, where Okina's thirst for blood and combat would never go unsated.
It is ultimately the hunts of the Bloody Fingers that earns Mohgwyn the ire of the world and eventually leads the player to Mohg's palace where they may fell the Lord of Blood.
    • Sir Ansbach: "It was you, wasn't it? Who defeated Lord Mohg.
      ...
Fear not, I bear no grudge against you.
His Eminence was felled in an honourable duel, and such are the risks of seeking Lordship.
Besides, what right have I to complain? I blame the enchantment more than anything."
  6. Lord of Blood's Exultation: "Render up your offerings of blood to your Lord. Drench my consort's chamber. Slake his cocoon's thirst. His awakening shall herald the dawn of our dynasty."
  7. Bloody Finger Hunter Yura: "Have you ever faced a Bloody Finger? They are Tarnished held in thrall by cessblood. Zealots who stalk their own. If you stay the path, you are certain to face more of them. Just remember. No kinship with their ilk remains. Their madness precludes it."
  8. Once the Player has completed all of Varré's trials, Varré will say that once he has inducted the player then they will be "A knight who will assist Luminary Mohg, the Lord of Blood, in the establishment of a new dynasty." before handing them the Pureblood Knight's Medal. This is the only moment spent with any of the members of Mohgwyn that still persist in the Lands Between, where the title of "knight" is ever mentioned. The title has otherwise been completely subsumed by "Bloody Fingers" in its stead.
