Map of the Haligtree

Miquella's Haligtree is a vast, misshapen tree in the far north of the Lands Between.[1] Built into the canopy is Haligtree Town, a sanctuary for the unwanted. At the base of the tree is Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, a city largely inhabited by the Haligtree Knights and Cleanrot Knights who serve Miquella and Malenia. Both areas contain statues of the twin Demigods.

Long ago, the Empyrean Miquella abandoned Golden Order Fundamentalism after realizing it could not treat Malenia's Scarlet Rot.[2] He sought to establish an Unalloyed Gold order away from the Erdtree and settled on the Haligtree.[1] Miquella watered the sapling with his own Empyrean blood, and later wove a cocoon and embedded himself within its trunk to nurture it directly.[3] However, it would fail to grow into an Erdtree. Before he could finish, Miquella was cut and taken from the tree by Mohg,[4] who was under his charm. The Lord of Blood zealously wished to raise the Empyrean to godhood and become his consort.[5] After returning from her battle with Radahn, Malenia awaited her brother's return at the base of the tree,[6] and over time infected the tree with her Scarlet Rot.

Nevertheless, the Haligtree and its city became a haven for those rejected by society, such as the Misbegotten and the Kindred of Rot. Loretta, a former Knight of Caria, founded a sanctuary for Albinaurics among the boughs of the Haligtree.[7][8] Those who made the pilgrimage presented a secret medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold to gain access to the Consecrated Snowfield. They traveled north and crossed the river to Ordina, Liturgical Town, where they journeyed through a Sending Gate.[9][10]

Notes[]

  • The Haligtree appears to have grown from the stump of an older tree.

Trivia[]

  • Haligtree is a combination of the Old English word hālig (holy, sacred; healthy, sound)[11][12] and tree. A literal translation would be "holy tree".
