With the Messages menu, you can write messages that players in other worlds can read at the spot where you left them. You can change the message format to leave more complex messages and also attach gestures to your messages. You can rate other players' messages. Whenever another player rates a message that you've written, your HP will be replenished. - In-game Menu Explanation for the Message Menu

Messages are an asymetric multiplayer mechanic, returning from many of FromSoftware's previous games, they allow players to potentially influence the gameplay experience of others through the sharing of cryptic, yet helpful hints, deceptive and unhelpful advice, jokes lightening the mood or sharing of one's rejoice of a glorious victory. Messages are written through the use of the Tarnished's Wizened Finger.
Write Message[]

Players can place down messages in the hopes of them getting rated. Should a message be rated, whether they be applauded or disparaged the player who's message have been rated will get some of their HP restored.
Messages are constructed through the use of filling in two (to potentially six) different slots for preset phrases in the form of three different formats, Templates, Words and Conjunctions (players may also add a Gesture to the message in order to add some extra clarification in terms of directions or just to give the message more personality).
Message Compositions[]
There are four different message compositions the player can chose from each varying the amount of available options. However the fourth composition is generally the most convenient since it'll still allow a message to be placed even if only the slots that are available in the first three compositions are filled.

Templates[]
Templates usually include a section of "****"s, these will be filled in by whatever option the player has selected in the "Words" box.

Conjunctions[]
Conjunctions become available should the first two "Templates" and "Word" boxes not be enough for the message's clarity and will serve as a transition between the first set of templates and words boxes into the newly revealed second set.

Gestures[]
Adding a Gesture will make a phantom version of the writer perform said gesture while other players are reading the message. Any Gesture that the player has found on their journey will be available for selection.
Messages Written[]

You can leave a total of 10 messages at a time. Once you've made an 11th message the game will automatically remove your oldest message no matter how highly rated it is.
Messages Discovered[]

Any messages you've read recently will be stored in this section for later reference and rating. The game can only remember 10 messages at a time though, so the moment you've read your 11th message, the oldest discovered message will be removed.
Rating Score[]
Messages will have their icons change over time depending on how many ratings it has received.
