Elden Ring Wiki

An unknown entity that drifts through the skies. It makes an ocean of its surroundings, that it may blend with whatever life is found, as if in a dream. Exercise caution, warriors.Augur Expedition

Maris, Fathom of Night, also known as the Augur and the Master of Bubbles, is a Nightlord boss in Elden Ring Nightreign. Maris, Fathom of Night is the Nightlord fought on the final night of the Augur Expedition. It is highly mobile, though it is quite passive and typically floats beyond the reach of melee attackers. It rams foes at great speeds and splashes bouncing waves of spirit water. Maris has hypnotic powers that lull its foes into a deep and deadly slumber. Maris deals Standard Physical and Magic Magic damage, and its attacks may inflict Sleep Sleep. Its weakness is Lightning Lightning damage, which easily staggers it during certain attacks.

Characteristics[]

Maris is a gelatinous invertebrate with an otherwise featureless face that radiates a bright white light. Its elongated, blue body contains a network of constellations. It is wrapped in a transparent shroud like jellyfish’s exumbrella, lending a crustacean-like silhouette. It swims using flexible bilateral tentacles that end in green, fin-like structures. In its second phase, long dark green ribbons unfurl behind it, trailing like strands of drifting seaweed.

Background[]

Like the Elden Beast, the Augur was an ancient stellar being that drifted through the skies. It camouflaged itself by transforming its surroundings into a vast ocean and blending with local lifeforms.[1] For eons, it wandered the cosmos in a dream-like trance—until it encountered the immense and lonesome Night. For the first time, its curiosity stirred.[2]

Boss Fight[]

  • Maris, Fathom of Night deals Standard Standard damage, Magic Magic damage, and inflicts Sleep Sleep.
  • This boss is vulnerable to a Critical Attack after its stance is broken.
  • Maris creates additonal enemies throughout the fight that function like environmental hazards. It summons plants with long, flexible stalks and swarms of volatile violet Spirit Jellyfish that chase down Nightfarers and explode in Mists of Slumber. During phase two, Maris drops atomic slumber bombs. All these entities are targetable, and may be destroyed with sufficient damage. They release projectiles that chase after and damage Maris.

Resistances[]

  • Damage Types
    • +0% indicates that a boss is neutral to that damage type.
    • A positive value (+%) indicates bonus damage.
    • A negative value (-% -% -%) indicates that a boss is resistant to the damage type.
  • Resistances
    • A lower value indicates faster procs of the applicable status effect.
    • The 🛇 symbol denotes full immunity to the status effect.

Moveset[]

Moveset
Attack Description
Spinning Charge Charges forward while spinning, damaging anything in its path and nearby.
Cyclone Spins toward the ground, generating a damaging whirlwind centered on itself.
Splash Slams tentacles downward, splashing a bouncing wave of water.
Hypnosis Makes a siren sound, repositions, and enters a cradle position. Lands for an extended duration to channel a devastating and unavoidable Sleep Sleep spell that spans the entire arena.
Summon Jellyfish Births a swarm of Soporific Spirit Jellyfish that aggressively chase players and detonate, inflicting Sleep Sleep buildup. Additonal jellyfish are created during Phase 2.
Summon Plants Releases a non-damaging pulse, summoning stationary Spirit Stalks that lash at nearby players throughout the arena.
Atomic Teardrop Drops large, luminous droplets that slowly fall from above and explode upon reaching the ground, inflicting Sleep Sleep in a very large area. May drop up to two bombs. Phase 2 only.

Augur Raid[]

The Augur is a lesser version of this boss encountered during the Giant Bubbles raid in Limveld. It spawns bubbles around the map. Entering one transports the player directly to the Augur. It is more passive and uses a limited moveset. Defeating Augur yields Runes 50,000 runes and grants the Unifying Fate boon, which causes the Flask of Crimson Tears to also restore FP.

Everdark Sovereign[]

  1. Everdark Maris spawns in as Phase 1
    • Defeat Phase 1 and loot a legendary Dormant Power containing the Nightfarers' starting weapon with the Storm Ruler Skill.
  2. Maris respawns as Phase 3
    • Now vast, Maris floats out of reach of most attacks and no longer spawns minions; the Storm Ruler is almost required.

Strategies[]

Maris, Fathom of Night may initiate the encounter by slamming its tentacles to produce wide, sweeping waves that bounce like Fire Spritestones. The waves are best avoided by rolling into them, rather than backward or to the side. Depending on character height and the amplitude of the wave, dodge rolling may not even be necessary. When Maris executes a spiraling water rush, players can similarly evade by rolling into the boss as it charges forward. On occasion, Maris generates a localized cyclone; players should disengage until the vortex dissipates before resuming offense.

Maris periodically delivers swarms of jellyfish that pursue players before detonating. These can be destroyed from range or deliberately triggered near Maris to inflict damage on the boss. Maris also summons ground-based stalks from below. These plants are similar to Spirit Eels, and attack by flailing their bodies like tentacles. These can be evaded through repositioning or neutralized directly, as they are easily destroyed. They also deal damage after being destroyed.

Maris makes a siren noise, retreats and lands and curls into a suspended sphere to channel a hypnotic incantation that rapidly induces Sleep Sleep buildup. This move applies to the entire arena and cannot be avoided. Therefore, this move must be interrupted immediately by closing distance and applying pressure. Lightning Lightning-based attacks are particularly effective at disrupting the channel and avoiding Sleep Sleep accumulation.

At approximately half health, Maris enters its second phase, becoming significantly more aggressive. It summons larger swarms of explosive jellyfish, which may be countered through the same methods as before. Additionally, it releases large luminous droplets that descend from above and explode on impact, applying Sleep Sleep buildup. These can be intercepted before contact using ranged attacks or avoided entirely by sprinting beyond the blast radius. Despite the increased intensity, most attacks remain heavily telegraphed, allowing skilled players to time evasive maneuvers and counterattacks.

Notes[]

  • The plants, jellyfish, and teardrop are coded like NPCs.
  • Plants and Jellyfish defeated by the Nightfarers release bubbles that chase and damage Maris. Destroying the slow-falling bombs releases larger bubbles that deal considerably more damage.
  • Maris is a mother because it births the Jellyfish.
  • Maris, the Master of Bubbles, may be related to the lost oracles of the Ancient Dynasty sought by Claymen.
  • The teardrop does not pass through player; players can balance them on their heads, delaying their detonation.

Trivia[]

  • Internal name: AbstractExistence
  • An augur was a priest that practiced augury, the interpretation of the will of the gods by studying events observed within a predetermined sacred space (templum). The templum corresponded to the heavenly space above.
  • Like Metyr, Mother of Fingers and the Elden Beast, Maris, Fathom of Night is among the oldest entities in the Elden Ring universe.
