O Greater Will, hear my voice. I am the recusant Bernahl, inheritor of my brother's will, and you will fall to my blade. - Knight Bernahl

”
|
Knight Bernahl is an NPC in Elden Ring.
Overview[]
Residing in the Warmaster's Shack of Limgrave, Knight Bernahl (騎士ベルナール) is a tarnished merchant who sells a number of Ashes of War. Bernahl was once a Tarnished champion worthy of becoming a lord, until his Finger Maiden cast herself into the flames.[1]
Should the Tarnished join the Volcano Manor, they'll meet again with Bernahl, but this time he'll introduce himself as "Recusant Bernahl" (背律者ベルナール). After assassinating the first targets commissioned by Tanith, Bernahl will invite the Tarnished to join him in his hunt of Vargram the Raging Wolf and Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm at the Fortified Manor of Leyndell, Royal Capital.
He will become as a summon against the Godskin Duo in Crumbling Farum Azula.
The Tarnished will come face to face with Bernahl one last time to the north of the Great Bridge in Crumbling Farum Azula, where the recusant will invade his former comrade.

Questline Progression[]
- Limgrave (Warmaster's Shack)
- (Optional) Speaking to Bernahl unlocks the option to purchase Ashes of War from him, regardless of the answer to his question.
- Mt. Gelmir (Volcano Manor)
- Speaking with Tanith and selecting "Join Volcano Manor" to receive the Drawing-Room Key, Bernahl will relocate to the eastern quarter of the manor, where Rya the Scout is also found.
- Mt. Gelmir (Volcano Manor)
- After assassinating Old Knight Istvan, as commissioned in the first Letter from Volcano Manor, speaking to Bernahl unlocks the option to purchase the Ashes of War he used to sell in Limgrave and two new additions, Eruption and Assassin's Gambit.
- Mt. Gelmir (Volcano Manor)
- After assassinating Rileigh the Idle, as commissioned in the second Letter from Volcano Manor, speaking to Bernahl prompts him to give the Letter to Bernahl to the Tarnished, inviting him to join forces against Vargram the Raging Wolf and Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm at the Fortified Manor of Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Leyndell, Royal Capital (Fortified Manor, First Floor)

- Mt. Gelmir (Volcano Manor)
- With the task fulfilled, returning to Bernahl prompts him to give Gelmir's Fury to the Tarnished. This will also unlock his summon sign in Crumbling Farum Azula.
- Mt. Gelmir (Volcano Manor)
- After defeating Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, exhausting Bernahl's dialogue triggers his departure from Volcano Manor. His shop will still be accessible via the "Sword of Bernahl" left on his chair.
- Crumbling Farum Azula (Dragon Temple Transept)
- (Optional) If the Tarnished and Bernahl hunted down Vargram and Wilhelm in Leyndell, the recusant's summon sign will appear outside the Dragon Temple, to aid his brother in arms against the Godskin Duo.
- Crumbling Farum Azula (Besides the Great Bridge)
- Following the path to the north from the Great Bridge, Bernhal will invade the Tarnished before the tower with the chest containing the Old Lord's Talisman. When defeated, he drops the Blasphemous Claw.
Notes[]
- If Rykard is killed by reaching him through the Abductor Virgin of Raya Lucaria before Bernhal moves to Volcano Manor, his regular drops will be found in the Warmaster's Shack.
- Bernahl's Bell Bearing will automatically upgrade its stock if its given to the Twin Maiden Husks after receiving the Drawing-Room Key, instead of beforehand.

English Dialogue |
First encounter at Warmaster's Shack |
---|
Not seen you before. |
Name's Bernahl. Tarnished, just like you. |
Let me ask you something. |
Are you here in the Lands Between to take up the fight? |
Does your faith in the guidance of grace hold firm, |
despite the collapse of the Golden Order? |
Answering "My faith holds firm" |
Yes, you're a Tarnished through and through. |
Takes me back, but that's a quality needed now more than ever. |
Any interest in bearing the torch, of my battle arts? |
All I know is the sword. Picked up a fair few tricks in my time, too. |
Now's the time to pass 'em on. To a good and proper Tarnished, like you. |
Answering "I'm not sure" |
Honest to a fault, I see. |
Such thoughts won't behove you, as a Tarnished. |
But there's nothing wrong with that. |
Any interest in bearing the torch, of my battle arts? |
All I know is the sword. Picked up a fair few tricks in my time, too. |
Now's the time to pass 'em on. To a good Tarnished, like you. |
Talk |
There's a myriad of battle arts in these lands that I've yet to discover. |
Mementos of all the warriors who raised their arms in battle, lost, and died. |
A fine tale, all told, of true chivalric romance. |
That's how I fell in love with the sword, and the arts of combat. |
It grants meaning even to falling in battle, to death itself. |
Talking after purchasing battle arts |
Oh, not had your fill, eh? |
Worry not, I've enough to keep you busy. |
After exiting dialogue without buying anything |
Not floating your boat, eh? |
Well, there's no rush. Knowledge of the arts can wait another day. |
Generic greeting |
Ah, hello. Glad to see you safe. |
Here to learn a battle art or two? |
Generic greeting |
There you are. |
Decided to bear the torch of my battle arts? |
Goodbye dialogue |
Well, until we meet again. |
First encounter in Volcano Manor (if not previously encountered in Limgrave) |
Who are you? |
And what in heaven's name are you doing here? |
The Volcano Manor is a pit of recusants who spit at grace and hunt our own kind. |
I hope you understand the weight of my words. |
First encounter in Volcano Manor (if previously encountered in Limgrave) |
You... |
What in heaven's name are you doing here? |
The Volcano Manor is a pit of recusants who spit at grace and hunt our own kind. |
I hope you understand the weight of my words. |
Answering "I don't understand" |
Then you must leave immediately. |
Those with weak stomachs have no place here. |
Talking again after answering "I don't understand" |
I thought I told you to leave. |
Or do you claim to understand? |
What it means to be a recusant, renouncing grace and hunting down one's own. |
Answering "I understand" (if previously answered "My faith holds firm") |
Well. As long as you understand what you're saying. |
I thought you a Tarnished bred by virtue. |
Perhaps playing that part led you to your doubts, I wonder. |
But know that the path you walk is blasphemy, and leads only to a miserable death. |
Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that. |
Answering "I understand" (if previously answered "I'm not sure") |
Well. As long as you understand what you're saying. |
You have harboured doubts from the very beginning. |
Perhaps this day was always lurking on the horizon. |
But know that the path you walk is blasphemy, and leads only to a miserable death. |
Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that. |
Answering "I understand" (if not encountered in Limgrave) |
Well. As long as you understand what you're saying. |
But know that the path you walk is blasphemy, and leads only to a miserable death. |
Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that. |
Answering "I understand" |
This blasphemous path leads only to a pitiful death. |
Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that. |
After completing Tanith's first request |
So. You've bloodied your sword in the hunt. |
Then I shall introduce myself once more. |
Bernahl, a recusant, just like you. |
Recusants have particular battle arts, styled to our methods of slaughter. |
Why not add some to your repertoire? |
Talking after purchasing battle arts |
Oh, not had your fill, eh? |
Talk |
You've come to understand, now, eh? |
To take power and make it his own, |
The recusant must hunt his own kind. |
To raise the flag of revolt against this sanctified pillaging, |
We recusants must become the most wretched of predators. |
All you can do is laugh. |
Generic greeting |
You're still alive, I see. |
Why not learn another battle art, see if we can't keep it that way. |
After completing Tanith's second request |
Look at you. A recusant through and through. |
I knew you had it in you. |
Take this. |
(Gives Letter to Bernahl) |
A special invitation, to hunt some of the first Tarnished who sat at the Roundtable Hold. |
If you should accept, I'll next see you on the field of battle. |
After defeating Vargram and Wilhelm |
Ah, I had hoped you'd soon return. |
I have the reward from Lady Tanith. |
Take it. It's yours, by right. |
(Gives Gelmir's Fury) |
Let us tread the path of the recusant together. |
Till we reach the miserable death that awaits us. |
After killing Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy |
So. You killed Rykard? |
I harbour you no ill will. The strong take. Such is our code. |
Even he was prepared to meet a wretched end when he first took blasphemy unto his very flesh. |
But anyroad, the Volcano Manor is no more. |
Though we may yet fulfil an old promise. |
We hunted our own kind, and took what was theirs. |
And with everything in hand, the time has come to rise, against the Erdtree. |
If talked to again |
O Greater Will, hear my voice. |
I am the recusant Bernahl, inheritor of my brother's will, and you will fall to my blade. |
We refuse to become your pawns. Consider this fair warning. |
If attacked |
Agh! |
What's wrong with you? |
I won't say it twice. Stop this. |
If turned hostile |
I suppose I have no choice, then. |
Is this what grace would have of us? |
If the player is killed |
Dog eat dog, once again. A sad lot, we Tarnished. |
Death |
You are an enigma, to be certain. |
The Volcano Manor awaits you. |
