Greatsword patterned after the black steeple of the Helphen, the lampwood which guides the dead of the spirit world. The lamplight is similar to grace in appearance, only it is said that it can only be seen by those who met their death in battle. — Helphen's Steeple

The Helphen, also known as the lampwood, is an unseen location in Elden Ring, believed to be a great tree in another world.
Overview[]
The lampwood is an important tree that beckons the dead in the spirit world.[1] It is the source of the lamplight that guides the spirits of warriors who fell in battle.[2] It has an implied connection to the Tibia Mariners,[3] who lead the dead from spectral vessels.[4][5]
Lamplight[]
The lamplight is visible only to those who perished in battle, a guiding light similar to the Grace of Gold in appearance.[1] Rather than leading the Tarnished to the Erdtree,[6] the rays of lamplight direct the dead to the Helphen.
Notes[]
- The lamplight may be red in color.
- A bright red gem is inlaid on Helphen's Steeple above the its "black steeple" depiction.
- The Tibia Mariners emit red light, which is confered to nearby Those Who Live in Death.[7]
- Skeletons affected by the mariners’ buffs exhibit glowing red eyes.
- The skeletons' burial in armor implies they died in battle.
- The red lights that appear in the Forbidden Lands are speculated to be the lamplight.
- The "branches" of Helphen's Steeple grow like those of coniferous trees.
- While conifers are found throughout the Lands Between, spirit conifers grow on the Mountaintops of the Giants.
- The Shadow Keep, Church District may have a connection to the Helphen due to the presence of Tibia Mariner boats and the appearance of its many spires.
- The Church District courtyard includes an unusual tree whose branches appear to grow downward like roots.
Trivia[]
- The requirements for receiving the lamplight are similar to those for entering Valhalla in Norse mythology.
