The roots of the Greattree were once linked to those of the Erdtree, or so they say, and it is for this reason catacombs are built around Greattree roots.- Root Resin

The Greattree is an unseen location in Elden Ring. It is presumed to have been a great tree that once existed in the Lands Between.

Overview[]

The vast network of Greattree roots spreads throughout the Lands Between.[1] The various catacombs of the region were built specifically around these roots.[2] The Greattree roots begin where those of the Erdtree end: the Deeproot Depths—the source of the Siofra and Ainsel Rivers.[3] The two root systems were once connected, which enabled Erdtree Burial.[4]

After Godwyn the Golden received Erdtree Burial at the base of the Erdtree's roots,[5] his soulless body transformed into the Prince of Death.[6] Over time, fragments of the Rune of Death leaked from his body and spread through the roots of the Greattree, giving rise to the baleful Deathroot.[1] Sometime after the Shattering,[7] the two root systems were allegedly disconnected due to the influence of Those Who Live in Death.[2][8]

Trivia[]

  • Several references to the Greattree were not present in the English version 1.00 of Elden Ring. The items had placeholder descriptions until a subsequent update.
  • The Greattree may not exist as a tree in the Japanese version of Elden Ring. All references use an archaic form of language, making translation difficult. Its literal translation is "great tree roots" or "great treeroots", but it could also mean "Great Roots". It is possible that there never was a tree, only the roots.
    • Compound names like Erdtree and lampwood follow conventions seen in Old English literature (e.g., Beowulf), commonly used in fantasy to evoke an older or more mythic tone.
