Grace (祝福, Shukufuku), also referred to as the Grace of Gold (黄金の祝福, Ōgon no Shukufuku),[1][2][3] is a blessing given to people throughout the Lands Between by the Elden Ring and the Erdtree that symbolizes its presence.[4] This blessing is represented by a golden light in the eyes of the inhabitants of the Lands Between.[5] Those who had grace bestowed on them, but later lost it, are known as Tarnished.[6]
Overview[]
Grace[]
The Lands Between are blessed by the presence of the Elden Ring and by the Erdtree, which symbolizes its presence, and this has given grace or blessing to the people throughout the land, great and small.[5]
At some point, Queen Marika the Eternal took away Grace from Godfrey, First Elden Lord and his kinfolk, turning them into Tarnished. They then left the Lands Between in an event called the Long March of the Tarnished. [7] Long afterwards, Grace would be returned to them, or their descendants, and they would be called back to the Lands Between.
At the time of the game, when given back, Grace itself is what gives the Tarnished their life.[8]
The Guidance of Grace[]
Sometimes, the Tarnished can see golden rays of Grace that point in a particular direction, called the Guidance of Grace. It exists to guide the Tarnished and lead them along the proper path. It was also said that the guidance of grace would ensure that a Finger Maiden be brought to her chosen Tarnished. Or at least, such was the promise long ago.[9]
Even now, some sites of grace retain that power, and their golden rays can guide the Tarnished along the way.[10]
It is said that true guidance awaits those with iron wills and unwavering faith,[11] although it can be lost.[12] [13][14] In fact, most Tarnished don't even see it nowadays. [15]
Those in distant lands who saw the guidance of grace were usually seen as undesirables, and were usually expatriated, after which they set to journey to the Lands Between.[16][17] Similarly, the churches outside the Lands Between, dedicated to the teachings of the Two Fingers, sent confessors out to follow the guidance of grace.
