Background[]
Dragons are the mortal descendants of the Ancient Dragons, who once ruled the Lands Between during a prehistoric era.[1] Unlike their predecessors, their fleshy hides bore no Gravel Stone scales.[2] They possessed fewer limbs and flew on feathered wings. Their snouts were more narrow and terminated in diminutive maxillary beaks.
The dragons were idolized by humans for their sheer strength and sublime beauty.[3][4] However, the ancient dragons viewed them as lowborn, paltry imitations.[5][6] While the drakes inherited the fiery breath of their forebears,[7] they could not channel their red lightning.[8] Yet, their vivacious red hearts were covered in sacred gravel stones.[9]
Dragon Communion[]
- Main article: Dragon Communion
In a long bygone age, the progenitor of mortal drakes assailed Dragonlord Placidusax in a failed bid for power that left both dragons grievously wounded.[10] On that day, the traitor, Bayle the Dread, and his entire bloodline were sentenced to death.[11] Many lesser dragons were hunted and devoured in retaliation for Bayle's treachery.[12][6]
The ancient dragon Florissax assumed mortal form to introduce the practice of Dragon Communion to humans.[13] The drakes became prey for landbound warriors, who pursued their power with Gravel Stone weapons and consumed their hearts.[6][9] To drake warriors, no flesh was finer than the heated essence of dragons,[14] and their bottomless hunger became a vehicle for the Dragonlord's wrath.[15]
Later events[]
Well before the first astrologers and the Erdtree, ice dragons held dominion over the Mountaintops.[16] Some time later, they were defeated by the Fire Giants, who drove them the Flame Peak.[17]
Many dragons in the current age descend from Elder Dragon Greyoll, a mother drake of colossal size.[18] Following the Battle of Aeonia, Greyoll and her offspring fled the Scarlet Rot by settling on a plateau in the northern reaches of Caelid, later known as Greyoll's Dragonbarrow.[19]
Variants[]
- Flying Dragon Description
Dragons who settled in northern Caelid with their mother, Elder Dragon Greyoll.
- There are six red-eyed Flying Dragons surrounding Greyoll. Greyoll will lose 20% of her health with each Dragon killed, meaning that killing five will cause Greyoll to die.
- Glintstone Dragon Description
Dragons imbued with glintstone roost atop the Moonlight Altar in western Liurnia of the Lakes. They can exhale Glintstone Breath, which inflicts magic damage.
- These Dragons do not respawn when killed.

Flying Dragons[]
- Flying Dragon Agheel Overview
Wandering Nobles in the ruins around the lake chant Agheel's name, praying that it will burn them to ash.[20] Flying Dragon Agheel is encountered in Agheel Lake in southern Limgrave, northwest of the Dragon-Burnt Ruins. It appears by flying down from above, torching a congregation of Wandering Nobles with dragonfire.
- Bloody Finger Hunter Yura is available as a summon for this fight, after speaking to him under the ruin south of the lake.
- After taking a critical hit, the target receives an additional 20% standard damage for the remainder of the fight.
- Defeating Flying Dragon Agheel will unlock Agheel's Flame, which can be obtained at the altar in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid for two Dragon Hearts.

- Flying Dragon Greyll Overview
A Flying Dragon encountered on the Farum Greatbridge (bridge south of Bestial Sanctum), on the northern peninsula of Greyoll's Dragonbarrow. Greyll is identical to Agheel in both appearance and ability. However, the bridge gives the player much less room to maneuver.

Glintstone Dragons[]
- Glintstone Dragon Smarag Overview
A devourer of sorcerers, whose body gradually became corrupted by the glintstones of those he ate.[21] Smarag is encountered near an island west of the Academy of Raya Lucaria and north of the Temple Quarter, guarding a corpse that holds the Academy Glintstone Key. Note that it is not necessary to kill this dragon to get the Academy Glintstone Key; it can be retrieved by either sneaking behind it or rushing beyond it before it's fully awakened to get at the corpse.
- Smarag is able to fire Glintstone Cometshards from his mouth, and can also unleash magic breath, akin to the fire breath of other Dragons.
- Defeating Glintstone Dragon Smarag will unlock Smarag's Glintstone Breath, which can be obtained at the altar in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid for two Dragon Hearts.

- Glintstone Dragon Adula Overview
A devourer of sorcerers, whose body became corrupted by glintstone. Adula was once bested by Ranni the Witch and subsequently swore a knightly oath to her Dark Moon.[22]
- Adula is first encountered outside Ranni's Rise in the Three Sisters, north of Caria Manor. After a brief fight, it disappears, only to reappear at the Moonlight Altar outside the Cathedral of Manus Celes.
- Adula can use magic breath, much like Smarag. However, it can also utilize Adula's Moonblade, conjuring a magic blade in its maw mid-flight and unleashing a wave that inflicts Frostbite.

Decaying Ekzykes[]
- Decaying Ekzykes Overview
A Dragon plagued by scarlet rot, encountered north-west of the Cathedral of Dragon Communion. Also known as the Dragon Communion Revenger, Ekzykes did not forget his hatred even as he succumbed to the rot.[23]
Instead of flames, Ekzykes breathes toxic clouds that inflict Scarlet Rot, covering a large area and taking a few seconds to dissipate. Its stomps also produce a small cloud of Scarlet Rot.
Defeating Decaying Ekzykes will unlock Ekzykes's Decay, which can be obtained at the altar in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid for two Dragon Hearts.

Borealis the Freezing Fog[]
- Borealis the Freezing Fog Overview
One of the ice dragons, who were lords of the Mountaintops before the Fire Giants chased them from the peak.[24] Borealis is encountered on the frozen lake in the northeast of the Mountaintops, emerging from a thick white fog.
Borealis exhales clouds that inflict Frostbite. Its stomps also produce small clouds of Frostbite.
Defeating Borealis the Freezing Fog will unlock Borealis's Mist, which can be obtained at the altar in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid for two Dragon Hearts.

Elder Dragon Greyoll[]
- Elder Dragon Greyoll Overview
Greyoll is known as the mother of the lesser dragons.[25] She is a massive but stationary dragon encountered in Greyoll's Dragonbarrow, just south of Fort Faroth. She is immobile, either having grown too weak to move or as a result of having fused with the surrounding rocks, but can still let loose fearsome roars to weaken her enemies.
- Defeating any of the six lesser dragons surrounding her will cause large amounts of damage to her, and killing them all will kill her.
- Defeating Elder Dragon Greyoll will unlock Greyoll's Roar, which can be obtained at the altar in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid for three Dragon Hearts.
- Elder Dragon Greyoll Strategy
While the intended method of defeating her is by killing the surrounding lesser dragons, killing Greyoll herself directly through another method, such as Blood Loss, will also kill these smaller dragons. This method will also effectively give another 20,000 Runes, making this an excellent place to use a Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot for more Runes early on.

Trivia[]
- Elder Dragon Greyoll was originally intended to be fought more directly.[verification needed] However, attempting to view this moveset results in heavy lag and slowdown which is presumably why it wasn't implemented.
