The Crucible Knights are a faction in Elden Ring.
Background[]
The Crucible Knights were an ancient order of warriors devoted to the primordial Crucible of life, the prior form of the Erdtree.[1] They were characterized by the torrent of life design emblazoned on their reddish armor.[7] Much like the Crucible they venerated, the Crucible Knights possessed the ability to manifest the forms of various beasts. It is said the vitalic power they drew from inhabited their very armor.
The two most-renowned Crucible Knights were Ordovis and Siluria, who each led their own separate sect within the order.[8][9] Ordovis led the Axe Knights in battle, wielding his signature greatsword and heavy hornshield.[10] On the other hand, Siluria led the Tree Knights, modled after the Erdtree's Crubile itself, armed with her mighty treespear.[11][12] Only one member of the order did not subscribe to the Axe and Tree distinction, its longest serving member, Devonia. They wore a unique hammer-shaped helmet and fought with a great hammer instead.
The Crucible Knights were instrumental in the rise of the Erdtree and fought for Godfrey when he was Elden Lord.[4][6] Despite their accolades, they too fell from grace. As the Erdtree flourished and its origin became a distant memory, the knights came to be treated with scorn for their chaotic strength and appearance.[2]
After Godfrey explusion from the Lands Between, the Crucible Knights remained, with the exception of Devonia. They entered the Realm of Shadow in search of the very source of the Crucible.[13] Their solitary quest led them to Ancient Ruins of Rauh where it was said the power of the Crucible once flourished.[14][15] Devonia fixated their gaze upon the distant Gate of Divinity atop the veiled tower of Enir-Ilim. With no leader left to guide them, the remaining knights went their separate ways. While some remained actively loyal to the Erdtree, most others scattered to isolated corners of the Lands Between, keeping silent vigils. One Crucible Knight even rebelled against the Erdtree by joining Praetor Rykard's Recusants, serving as the persoanl bodyguard of his consort, Lady Tanith.
Characteristics[]
The weapons of the Crucible Knights were forged with the red-tinted primordial gold, and are imbued with its divine energies.[16] As a result, they serve as conduits for invoking the primal Aspects of the Crucible.[3] These abilities manifest as gleaming pair golden wings, a hefty tail covered in horns, or an expandable throat pouch filled with fiery breath.[17][6] High-ranking members of the Crucible Knights were able to use their weapons to generate a Crucible vortex.[18][19] The wind generated by these abilities is capable of forming tornados.[20]

Trivia[]
- In the Closed Network Test, there were said to be 16 Crucible Knights of Godfrey.[23] This was once the case until the spirited-away Crucible Knight Devonia was added in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
- The Crucible Knights are relics that represent the prehistoric Crucible era which predated the Age of the Erdtree. The Crucible Knights are named after three sequential geological periods from the Paleozoic Era. From oldest to youngest, they are Ordovician (Ordovis), Silurian (Siluria), and Devonian (Devonia).
- Ordovis is named after the Ordovician, which lasted from 485.4 million years ago to 443.8 million years ago.
- Siluria is named after the Silurian, which followed the conclusion of the Ordovician and lasted until 419.2 million years ago.
- Devonia is named after the Devonian period, which was about 419.2 million to 358.9 million years ago
- Although Devonia was the longest-serving member, they are named for the youngest period.
- "Trees" evolved leaves, true roots, and seeds during the Devonian period.
- Wattieza, the earliest known genus of trees, existed during the Devonian period. They were closely related to ferns, had fronds instead of leaves, and reproduced via spores.
- The period that followed the Devonian was the Carboniferous, during which pentadactyly (five-fingers) evolved.
