Curse you, Bayle! I hereby vow you will rue this day! Behold, a true drake warrior and I, Igon! Your fears made flesh! Solid of scale you might be, foul dragon, but I will riddle with holes your rotten hide! With a hail of harpoons! With every last drop of my being! Bayle the Dread…you shall haunt me no longer!

Bayle the Dread was a legendary black dragon who is said to be the ancestor of the drakes or lesser dragons. Long ago, Bayle betrayed the Ancient dragons and clashed with Dragonlord Placidusax.[1] Their vicious battle ended in stalemate and left both dragons with grievous injuries and loss of body parts, with Bayle losing his two winged arms, his pair of wings on his back and his left leg, with the dreaded dragon fleeing to the Jagged Peak soon afterwards.[2][3]
Dragon Communion[]
As punishment for his betrayal, Placidusax created the art of Dragon Communion, sending his followers to shepherd humanity into hunting Bayle and his descendants.[4] As reward for felling the drakes, the dragon hunters consumed their hearts in order to gain their power. Bayle was pursued by Florissax, a servant of Placidusax who sought to recruit mortals in the hunt for Bayle.[5][6]
Dragonslayer Igon, a particularly obsessive drake warrior, was one such mortal. Igon faced Bayle, but was left broken in both body and spirit by their battle.[7][8]
Drake Warrior[]
The gravelstone heart of Bayle
Igon was stumbled upon by a Tarnished champion, and begged them to summon his spirit to face Bayle once more. Together, the pair succeed in slaying Bayle.[9][10]
If Bayle's heart is eaten at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, his willpower will one day consume the body and soul of the drake warrior.[11]
Igon and Florissax will reward the player after Bayle is defeated.
Bayle is the only boss in the game who displays the text 'Legend Felled' when defeated who does not drop a Remembrance. Rather, he drops the Heart of Bayle, which functions similarly, with some differences.
The Heart cannot be consumed to receive Runes, nor duplicated.
Trivia[]
Bayle's name is a corruption of "bale," which refers to a destructive and evil force.
Bayle's name and moniker "The Dread" may also be a reference to the dragon Balerion, The BlackDread from author and the base game's co-writer George R. R. Martin's fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
