Ashes of War

Ashes of War are special items in Elden Ring that can be used to modify the Skills of certain armaments, and (optionally) infuse them with one of a selection of possible Affinities. With any Whetblade, they can be applied to compatible armaments while resting at a Site of Grace, or by Smithing Master Hewg.

Ashes of War are not consumed when applied; rather, they are slotted into the armament, and can be removed at any time.

Usage & Application

Each Ash of War corresponds to a specific Skill, and can only be applied to armaments compatible with that skill; for instance, Ash of War: Piercing Fang can only be applied to weapons capable of thrusting attacks, but Ash of War: Kick can be applied to any melee weapon. Ashes of War also cannot be applied to any weapon that is upgraded using Somber Smithing Stones.

Ashes of War also each have a corresponding "native" Affinity; for instance, Ash of War: Bloody Slash has the Blood affinity. When being applied to an armament, this Affinity can optionally be infused to change the weapon's base damage values, damage scaling, and/or status effect buildups; alternatively, the armament can be left with the Standard affinity to keep the default scaling, and other affinities can be chosen if corresponding Whetblades are held.

Ashes of War can be freely removed from weapons — refunding the Ash and reverting the weapon to its default Skill — or directly transferred between weapons. They can also be duplicated by Hewg with Lost Ashes of War — whether in the inventory or already on a weapon — consuming them in the process.

Acquisition

Ashes of War are most commonly obtained as a drop from certain Teardrop Scarabs; however, they are sometimes contained in chests, sold by merchants, dropped by certain enemies such as Night's Cavalry or the unique Godrick Knight in Fort Haight, or occasionally are available as potential rewards from boss Remembrances — for example, Ash of War: Waves of Darkness from the Remembrance of the Naturalborn.

Additionally, some weapons have Ashes of War pre-equipped on acquisition, such that they can be applied to other weapons or duplicated from them. For example, the Nagakiba has Ash of War: Piercing Fang equipped on acquisition, despite having Unsheathe as its base skill when Piercing Fang is removed; and Backhand Blade has Ash of War: Blind Spot pre-equipped while simultaneously having Blind Spot as its underlying base skill. This often occurs when the Ash is otherwise impossible to obtain naturally.

Skill Scalings

It depends on the Ash of War individually if the Skill it grants scales with the weapon's attack rating, or your character's stats and the weapon's upgrades.

For example: Ash of War: Lion's Claw will deal over 1000 damage on a Keen-infused +25 Flamberge equipped to a character with 20str/40dex and less than 1000 if the Ash of War's default Heavy-infusion was chosen instead; meanwhile, Ash of War: Ground Slam will deal less damage if any infusion option other than Heavy is chosen, even if the weapon's attack rating would be higher with something else.
