The Ancient Ruins of Rauh (ラウフの古遺跡, Raufu no Furui Iseki, possibly Lauf), also known as the Rauh Ruins, is a subregion of the Realm of Shadow in Shadow of the Erdtree.
Overview[]
The most important figure depicted in Rauh
The Ancient Ruins of Rauh is an area defined by verdant life and flowing water. It features numerous waterfalls and pools where Dewgems grow in abundance, and its paved roadways are bisected by irrigation channels. This massive stone complex was once part of a ancient civilization that spanned the entire Lands Between, but it has since flooded, split in half, and became overgrown with plants and wildlife.
The Ancient Ruins of Rauh is perched high above the Rauh Base, and connected via bridge to the Shadow Keep in the east. It comprises the upper section of the Rauh Ruins, located within the Land of the Tower.

The artifacts for spiritual manipulation discovered in Rauh
The ancient Rauh civilization predated the hornsent, and rivaled the Ancient Dynasty and Farum Azula as one of the earliest cultures to emerge in the Lands Between.[1][2] The primordial Crucible of life flourished and likely originated in Rauh,[3][4] and, according to legend, the "mother of all Crucibles" first appeared on the Giants.[5] Its influence mutated the local wildlife to grow aspects of other creatures, such as horns and feathers.[6][7] The area was suffused with such potent spirituality that an acrid Spirit Calculus formed on its inhabitants over time.[8]
According to hornsent scholars, the inhabitants of Rauh practiced a form of spiritual manipulation. Their most well-known artifact was the Spritestone, also known as "bondstone," which could manipulate the moment when a spirit vanished.[9] These spritestones were crafted using Rauh Burrows, oval-shaped stones modeled with small, nest-like holes at their center to be inhabited by spirits, enabling them to function as ritual implements.[10] Bondstones were large burrowstones with a white gem obtained from polishing a special crystal. These were used to control the explosions of spiritual powers, thus determining the moment when the bond with the spirit would be broken.[11]
For unknown reasons, the civilization of Rauh collapsed, and the city fell into ruin. It was split in two by a great chasm and became flooded and densely overgrown with vegetation.[12] The secrets of spiritual bonding were lost to time.[13]
Hornsent[]
After their rise to power, the hornsent made expeditions to the Rauh ruins. They sought to understand the secrets of antiquity because these ruins were strongly associated with the Crucible that they held sacred. They erected the Church of the Bud in the Rauh ruins. The structure was known for its flowers and featured a large ornamental bud and stone platform for viewing adjacent Belurat and Enir-Ilim. Whether intentional or not, it was constructed atop a divine element.[14][15] Later, hornsent archaeologists rediscovered the process for making spritestones and other forgotten spiritual arts.[13]
Age of the Erdtree[]
During Messmer's Crusade, his army marched toward Enir-Ilim through the ruins of Rauh.[verification needed] They razed the Church of the Bud and installed the Sealing Tree on the stone platform.[verification needed] However, the ruins were preserved due to the intervention of Fire Knight Salza, who defied orders to burn them.[16] Messmer's forces collected large horned beasts and tanglehorned giants from the ruins for the Specimen Storehouse instead.[verification needed][17][18]
As the Church of the Bud burned around her, Romina sat on the ground, clutching the bud in speechless silence.[15] She discovered a twisted divine element in the ashes and modified it into the scarlet rot.[14] After the Battle of Aeonia, Romina summoned and soothed Malenia's unwanted butterflies, who allowed her to practice an ancient purification ritual once lost to time.[19] Her actions imbued the church's flowers with scarlet rot, caused local Spider Scorpions to grow in size, and transformed the landscape surrounding the Church of the Bud into a scarlet rot swamp.[20]

The ruins are a lush oasis of green in the dour Realm of Shadow. Their sanctity is ensured by Fire Knight Salza, who guards the west entrance to the city. The eastern section of the complex is home to many Bloodfiends and horned beasts. The subterranean structures are excavated by Shadow Undead in search of the secrets of Rauh. The western half of the ruins are dominated by a Servants of Rot cult led by Romina, Saint of the Bud. The waters in this section are stagnant, festering pools of rot. Like the Scarlet Buds of the Church, the bodies of the Kindred of Rot have turned bright scarlet, indicating their acceptance by Romina.[citation needed] The ruins are also home to many Spider Scorpions and other creatures touched by the Crucible.[21]

Notes[]
- Internal Name: モヘンジョダロ,[25] Mohenjo-Daro, an ancient ruin of the real-world Indus Valley Civilization.
- A small portion of this area is accessible early by traveling through the Sending Gate at the Fifth Belfry, located behind Castle Ensis on the Scadu Altus.
- Statues of a mysterious woman wearing a great octagonal crown are prominently featured throughout the ruins.[26] Both the hornsent and Kindred of Rot offer their prayers to the "Rauh goddess" figure.[27][28] The Verdigris Discus can be found under one of these statues,[29] while the Antiquity Scholar's Cookbook [2] and the Bondstone are located beneath another, held by the corpse of a hornsent.[11][13] In addition, female figures with pointed headpieces and long side veils are represented in other artistic reliefs in the architecture.[30]
